Assignment 2 - Pinhole Photography
For this assignment, I made one pinhole camera out of a tea can. It was a very good indoor camera, but lacked a little bit in terms of how it worked outdoors. A lot of the outdoor exposures were very short, usually around 3-5 seconds, and the indoor ones had to be quite long, averaging around about 20 mins per exposure.
For part of the assignment, we had to look at photographing where the eye cannot see. For this one, I decided to place the camera on top of some objects that were sitting on one of the hallway tables since it is not how I would normally view the world.
This is a 20 minute indoor exposure.
A second part of our assignment was to look at duration. I accomplished this by placing my pinhole camera on top of a hand sanitizer dispenser in the hallway, pointing it towards me, and making sure that the camera could see the hallway behind me. I did a 20 minute exposure and moved every 5 minutes to try and show the passage of time.
You can see little fragments of movement mostly in the bottom foreground of this image. There are small spots that are blurry from my movement.
The last part of the assignment was to do a self portrait. I tried to do this in a couple of ways. My first try was in a mirror, which overexposed. For this one, I stood in front of a window inside and did a short 1 minute exposure to see what would happen, considering most of my indoor exposures averaged at around 20 mins. It actually worked very well!
The sun was going down, so there was not much light coming through the window. I am glad that this one worked, even though it was not as far back as I wanted.
As a bonus, here is another one that I found to be really cool. It is a very short outdoor exposure at 5 seconds, but I like how it captured the tree and a very small bit of the parking lot outside of the fine arts building.
Negatives
An eerie-looking version of the tree, that I have been told looks as though it could be reminiscent of lighting. It makes the tree look really cool.
You can better see the aspects of movement in the negative. There is more of a clear distinction of it here.
